ACCOLADE FOR HEYWOOD MAGIC MARKET
On Tuesday 15th May Heywood MAGIC Market was praised in a speech delivered by Communities Minister Ruth Kelly. Speaking in Sheffield she delivered a speech relating to Council Buildings under threat of closure. She advised that Heywood Market was one of the pilots in the scheme which saw Heywood Market traders take over the Management of the Market which was threatened by closure and turned it into a success. A new report (Quirk Review)spotlights the Heywood MAGIC Group - where traders formed a special trust to manage a threatened market building which is now not just a successful market but also provides a Community and Training Room for Heywood. The report said "Current trader occupancy is a 100% at a time when many markets are failing". "More stalls are being developed and training is used on a regular basis by Primary Care Trusts and Manchester University". "The training facility is so popular that officers from the council or other agencies are frequently turned away in favour of bookings from the local community".
The Heywood MAGIC Board are very proud of what they have achieved they consider it to be a tremendous accolade. The Market was losing £70,000 per year under Council control, since MAGIC took the market over in December 2002 they have made profits year on year as well as supporting the Community. Occupancy levels when we took over were just over 60%, currently they are around 100%.
The Board and the Traders consider the Market to have an extremely bright future.
